Purpose
The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to establish uniform appearance and safety standards for EMT-Basic personnel while on duty, during training, and while representing the agency in public. Proper uniform wear promotes professionalism, responder safety, agency identification, and public trust.
Scope
This SOP applies to all EMT-Basic personnel, probationary members, part-time staff, volunteers, and any personnel operating under the authority of the agency.
Personnel shall report to duty in a clean, serviceable, and professional uniform at all times.
1. Shirt Requirements
- Agency-issued EMS uniform shirt or approved equivalent only.
- Shirt color and style must comply with agency standards.
- Shirts shall display:
- Agency patch
- Name plate or embroidered name
- EMT certification level if required
Wear Standards
- Shirts must be clean, wrinkle-free, and properly fitted.
- Undershirts, if worn, shall be solid black or white with no visible logos.
- Sleeves shall not be rolled unless authorized.
- Torn, faded, or damaged shirts are prohibited.
2. Pants Requirements
- Dark navy or black EMS-style tactical or uniform pants.
- Pants must allow full mobility and safe operation during emergency responses.
Wear Standards
- Pants shall be clean and free from excessive wear or damage.
- Cargo pockets are permitted if part of approved EMS pants.
- Jeans, athletic pants, sweatpants, or non-uniform pants are prohibited.
- Pant legs shall not drag on the ground.
- Black boots or duty shoes approved for EMS operations.
- Footwear must provide:
- Slip resistance
- Ankle support
- Protective toe support if required
Wear Standards
- Boots/shoes must remain clean and serviceable.
- Open-toed footwear is strictly prohibited.
- Footwear shall be fully laced or secured while on duty.
- Excessively worn or damaged footwear shall be replaced.
4. Head Wear
Approved Head Wear
- Agency-issued baseball cap, winter cap, or approved head covering.
- Head wear shall display agency identification when applicable.
Wear Standards
- Hats shall be worn forward-facing unless otherwise authorized.
- Non-agency logos or designs are prohibited.
- Head wear must be clean and professional in appearance.
5. Jacket Requirements
Approved Outerwear
- Agency-issued EMS jacket, fleece, or approved weather-resistant outerwear.
- Jackets shall maintain visibility of agency identification whenever possible.
Wear Standards
- Outerwear must be appropriate for weather conditions.
- Non-approved jackets or hoodies shall not be worn while representing the agency.
- Jackets shall remain zipped or properly fastened during operations when practical.
6. ANSI Safety Vest
Required Use
- ANSI-compliant reflective safety vest shall be worn:
- On roadway incidents
- During low-visibility operations
- At scenes requiring traffic exposure protection
Wear Standards
- Vest must meet applicable ANSI visibility standards.
- Reflective material shall remain visible and unobstructed.
- Damaged, faded, or torn vests must be replaced immediately.
General Appearance Standards
- Personnel shall maintain a professional appearance at all times.
- Uniforms shall be free from stains, tears, or offensive odors.
- Jewelry shall not interfere with safety or patient care.
- Personnel hygiene shall meet professional healthcare standards.
- Visible offensive or inappropriate graphics, patches, or accessories are prohibited.
Compliance
Failure to comply with this SOP may result in corrective action in accordance with agency policy and supervisory review.
Conclusion
Maintaining a professional EMS uniform standard improves responder safety, agency image, public confidence, and operational readiness. All EMT-Basic personnel are expected to comply with these standards while on duty or representing the agency.
